Boarding Life

Welcome from Assistant Principal: Boarding

First class Boarding facilities for both boys and girls are offered in our “boutique-style” Boarding Houses. Boys' Boarding is on the Day Campus while Girls' Boarding is a short distance from it.

While Boarding life can never replace the family home, every effort is made at The Cathedral College Boarding Houses to create a safe, warm, supportive and comfortable environment where personal growth and the forging of lifelong friendships go hand in hand with a disciplined study program.

Girls' Boarding

Boarding accommodation for some Year 9s and 10, 11,12 girls is provided in Coolock with all girls enjoying recently refurbished single rooms in a spacious facility overlooking the city. Complementing these very modern rooms are recreational lounge areas on each of the three accommodation floors.

Girls in Year 7, 8 and 9 enjoy modern and comfortable shared rooms in the historic and beautiful Genazzano.  Air conditioned accommodation is provided to all girls.

Boys' Boarding

On the site of the Day Campus, the boys are accommodated in their newly purpose-built air conditioned Boarding facility.  Boys in Year 7 & 8 enjoy twin-share rooms while Year 9 to 12 enjoy single rooms.  The boys have direct access to the College's oval and all facilities.

The Boarding Houses are fortunate to be relatively small in numbers (106 girls, 80 boys) and to have dedicated staff willing to provide students with personal care and attention.

At both Boarding Houses, community spirit is a big part of life. In addition to the extra-curricular activities offered by the Day Campus, many Boarding students participate in dance, music and a variety of sporting activities. Weekend activities offered to Boarding students include beach trips, shopping, sport and craft activities.  New students to boarding are mentored by voluntary 'Big Brothers'/'Big Sisters' and are provided a Boarding Buddy closer to their age group who helps them with their day to day routines which further accentuates our emphasis on pastoral development and the forging of positive relationships in our Boarding Houses..

As The Cathedral College is a Catholic College, Boarding students and staff join the worshipping community of St Joseph’s Cathedral for Mass Saturday evenings.

Boarders at both Houses have access to the College's IT systems via WiFi, basketball courts, ovals, swimming pools and Gym facilities.

The College employs its own Chefs and Catering Staff who provide nutritious meals to both Boarding Houses in consultation with the College’s qualified and experienced Food Consultant.  A wide range of fresh and prepared food is provided and special dietary requirements can be met. Themed dinners are held regularly (Mexican, Italian, Indian and Asian nights) and special occasion dinners such as Valentine’s Day, Melbourne Cup Day, the Sisters of Mercy dinner and "Birthday Dinners" are among some of our regular combined ‘get togethers’.

Many of the College academic staff offer tutorial sessions after hours.  A range of other activities (such as access to the College Homework Club) as well as transport to private tuition is arranged on a daily basis.

Our Boarding students take great pride in being “boarders” and their diversity of backgrounds, interests and home locations adds a unique and very valued facet to our school culture and experience.  Boarders are strongly encouraged to engage in the local community and all that it has to offer.
