From debating legal topics in the classroom, Year 12 student Alannah has advanced to the nation’s capital representing Queensland at the National Schools Constitutional Convention held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra recently.
On the 50th anniversary of the Whitlam dismissal Alannah joined with 113 youth delegates from across Australia to debate the topic ‘Should Section 53 of the Constitution be amended to prevent the Senate from blocking supply (rejecting money bills)?’ with outcomes from the Convention tabled in Parliament.
Alannah, who thrives in Legal Studies, was impressed with the line-up of stimulus speakers including the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC to further inform and inspire delegates to lend their voice for the common good.
“I met and heard from so many amazing people who shared valuable perspectives on the issue,”
“The opportunities and experiences really opened my mind and gave me a deeper understanding of youth voice and the role young people play in driving change across Australia,” she said.
As part of the program Alannah attended the Prime Minister’s Welcome Reception at Parliament House hosted by The Hon Jason Clare MP, Minister for Education, as well as an official dinner at the National Press Club.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the experience and have grown so much in my knowledge and appreciation of our democracy, our constitution and the country we live in,” Alannah said.
