AgConnect Students Explore Careers + Industry Opportunities
AgConnect students have enjoyed a busy and rewarding start to the term, with hands-on experiences that have provided valuable insights into the agricultural industry and the many career pathways it offers.
On just the second day of term, 59 AgConnect students attended the 2026 Brahman Week Sale at CQLX. The day began with an informative presentation delivered by our reigning Queensland Inter School Young Judging team, who shared their knowledge of Brahman breed traits and characteristics, how to navigate a sale catalogue, and auction etiquette.
Students then had the opportunity to experience the excitement of a major livestock sale firsthand, witnessing impressive sales including a red bull that sold for $210,000. The excursion highlighted the scale and significance of the beef industry while allowing students to observe the many professionals involved in bringing such an event together.
Following their return to school, students participated in a debrief session where they identified more than 50 different careers represented at the sale, reinforcing the wide range of opportunities available within the agricultural sector.
This week, 25 AgConnect students attended an excursion to the Central Queensland Innovation and Research Precinct (CQIRP), where they explored the science and innovation driving modern agriculture.
During the morning session, From Seed to Science, students took part in hands-on activities focused on crop sciences, plant experiments, grains and grain quality. In the afternoon, students explored Gut Feeling: The Science of Digestion, gaining an understanding of animal nutrition and feed digestibility. The session included a visit to the laboratory, an opportunity to learn about current research projects, and discussions with PhD students about careers in agricultural science and research.
These experiences continue to demonstrate the value of the AgConnect program, providing students with opportunities to engage directly with industry, explore emerging technologies, and discover the diverse career pathways available within agriculture.
The College extends its thanks to AgConnect Co-Ordinator and Pathways Officer Sally Compagnoni, assisted by Mrs Sandra Drake and Campus Minister Hannah Smailes, for supporting these valuable learning opportunities.
